Is it safe to ask an AI about your baby's sleep?
Parents ask chatbots about sleep at 3am because nothing else is open. That instinct is reasonable — but a general-purpose assistant was not built for paediatric sleep, and the ways it fails are predictable. This page sets out what goes wrong with generic AI advice, and the specific rules Lunio and Nora work inside.

The short answer
- A general chatbot will answer confidently even when it has mixed up two age bands — and wake windows change fast between four and twelve months.
- It has no way to know that what you are describing is a medical symptom rather than a habit.
- It does not remember last night, so it cannot tell whether a plan is working or needs changing.
- Lunio works from AASM and AAP age recommendations, never recommends formal sleep training before 16 weeks, and stops coaching and points you to a doctor when you describe a red flag.
- Lunio is educational coaching, not medical diagnosis or treatment.
Four things generic AI gets wrong about infant sleep
- Age drift: guidance for a six-month-old and a ten-month-old is genuinely different, and a general model blends them. A wake window that is 40 minutes too long is the single most common cause of a ruined bedtime.
- Invented specifics: asked for exact minutes, a model will produce exact minutes — whether or not any source supports them. Confidence is not accuracy.
- No safety floor: general assistants will happily discuss sleep-training methods for a newborn. Formal sleep training is not appropriate before 16 weeks (four months).
- No escalation: snoring with pauses, unusual daytime sleepiness, a sudden change in feeding or weight, or a child who cannot be settled at all are not scheduling problems. A chatbot will keep coaching. It should stop.
How Lunio is built differently
Every schedule, wake-window range and regression timeline Lunio uses comes from published paediatric sleep research and consensus guidelines — principally the American Academy of Sleep Medicine consensus on sleep duration, endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, cross-checked against the National Sleep Foundation panel. The numbers are not generated on the fly; they are fixed ranges for each age band that the plan works within.
Nora asks about your child's actual age in months before giving any timing, and keeps that age band for the whole consultation. The plan she writes is checked against the same ranges the rest of the site uses.
The safety rules Nora follows
- No formal sleep training recommendations before 16 weeks (four months). Before then, guidance is limited to safe sleep environment, feeding rhythm and day-night light exposure.
- Safe sleep guidance follows AAP recommendations: infants sleep on their back, on a firm flat surface, with no loose bedding or soft objects.
- Red-flag deflection: if you mention fever, breathing pauses, choking or gasping in sleep, unusual lethargy, a sudden change in weight or feeding, or a developmental concern, Nora stops giving sleep-training guidance and directs you to your paediatrician or family doctor.
- Nora never diagnoses a medical condition, never recommends medication or supplements, and never tells you to ignore clinical advice you have already been given.
- For situations beyond healthy behavioural adjustment, Lunio points parents to their paediatrician or family doctor first, and to a certified paediatric sleep consultant for ongoing hands-on support.
What Nora does with what you tell her
The consultation exists to write your plan and support you through the reset. Your answers are used for that. We do not sell personal data, and you can ask us to delete your consultation record at any time by writing to hello@hellolunio.com. Full detail is in our privacy policy.
When you should not be using any AI — ours included
If your child is unwell, if their breathing during sleep worries you, if they are losing weight or feeding much less, if they are significantly behind on developmental milestones, or if you yourself are not safe to continue — stop and speak to a clinician. Sleep advice is the wrong tool for those situations, however it is delivered.
Common questions
Is an AI sleep consultant safe to use for a newborn?
Lunio does not provide formal sleep-training guidance for infants under 16 weeks (four months), in line with AAP and AASM positions. For newborns, guidance is limited to safe sleep environment, feeding rhythm and daylight exposure. For anything beyond that at this age, speak to your paediatrician or health visitor.
What happens if my child is ill or something medical is going on?
Nora is built with red-flag deflection. If a parent mentions fever, breathing pauses or gasping during sleep, sudden lethargy, a significant change in feeding or weight, or a developmental concern, she stops sleep coaching and directs the parent to contact their paediatrician or family doctor.
Can an AI replace a human sleep consultant?
No, and it should not try to. Lunio handles standard behavioural sleep adjustment for healthy children aged six months to eight years — the common cases of night waking, early rising, bedtime resistance and nap trouble. Where a family needs clinical assessment or hands-on human support over weeks, Lunio's role is to say so and point them to their doctor or a certified paediatric sleep consultant.
Why is asking ChatGPT about wake windows risky?
A general assistant will give you a confident number without knowing your child's exact age in months, their current nap count, or what you already tried. Wake windows change substantially between four and twelve months, and being 30 to 40 minutes out is enough to wreck a bedtime. Use a source that is built around a fixed age band — our free wake window calculator is one.
Does Lunio give medical advice?
No. Lunio provides educational coaching on behavioural sleep habits, not medical diagnosis or treatment. It is not a substitute for assessment by a qualified clinician.
